Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. Tumor progression is a phenomenon where the pre-formed tumor acquires successive mutations to become clinically more aggressive and malignant. In the 1950s, Foulds first described the stepwise progression of cancer cells through successive stages.

Summary

Cathepsin K is highly expressed in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) tumors and surrounding stroma. This protease may drive BCC invasion and unique histopathological features through extracellular matrix degradation.

  • Cathepsin K expression in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) remains uncharacterized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the expression of cathepsin K in BCC tumor cells and peritumoral stromal cells.
  • To compare cathepsin K expression in BCC with normal skin tissues.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on 50 BCC cases.
  • Additional samples included actinic keratosis (10), Bowen's disease (10), and normal skin (5).

Main Results:

  • Cathepsin K was detected in normal skin's stratum corneum, sebaceous cells, and hair follicles.
  • All BCC cases exhibited cathepsin K expression in tumor cells (90% diffuse) and peritumoral stroma.
  • Focal expression was noted in Bowen's disease, but not in actinic keratosis.

Conclusions:

  • Cathepsin K is significantly expressed in BCC, suggesting a role in tumor progression.
  • Its activity may mediate extracellular matrix degradation, contributing to BCC invasion and fibromucinous stroma formation.
