Summary

A rare fungal infection, phaeohyphomycosis, was diagnosed in a young woman with systemic lupus erythematosus presenting with a back nodule. This marks the first reported case in Puerto Rico.

  • Histopathological examination of the nodule was performed.

  • The histopathology confirmed a diagnosis of phaeohyphomycosis, a fungal infection caused by dark-pigmented fungi.
  • This represents the first documented case of phaeohyphomycosis in Puerto Rico.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering rare fungal infections in immunocompromised patients, even with atypical presentations.
