Summary

Background:

Place-based policing interventions show promise for crime control.
Despite widespread adoption, rigorous evaluations of these strategies are rare.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a rigorous ex post facto evaluation of the Boston Police Department's Safe Street Team (SST) hot spots policing program.
To assess the violent crime control benefits of the SST program.

Main Methods:

Utilized a nonrandomized quasi-experimental design with propensity score matching to identify comparable locations.
Employed growth curve regression models to analyze violent crime trends.
Created a micro-level database of violent index crimes for all street segments and intersections in Boston.

Main Results:

The SST program demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in violent index crimes at treated locations.
No evidence of crime displacement to proximate areas was found.

Conclusions:

Innovative evaluation approaches are crucial for assessing real-world policing interventions.
The study underscores the effectiveness of place-based policing strategies when rigorously evaluated.
