General practitioners need better genetics education. Key priorities include recognizing hereditary disease signals, evaluating referrals, and understanding genetic test capabilities for improved patient care.
Area of Science:
- Genetics education in primary care
- General practice and hereditary diseases
Background:
- General practitioners (GPs) face increasing demands to provide genetics services.
- Current primary care genetics education is inadequate and requires innovation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify and prioritize essential topics for genetics education tailored to general practice.
- To guide the development of improved genetics training for GPs.
Main Methods:
- A three-round Delphi consensus procedure was employed.
- An expert panel (n=18) including GPs, GP trainers, clinical geneticists, and patient representatives participated.
- Participants rated and ranked educational needs in genetics knowledge, skills, and attitudes.
Main Results:
- Significant agreement was reached on the top 10 genetic education priorities (Kendall's W = P < 0.001).
- The highest-ranked need was recognizing potential hereditary disease signals.
- Other key priorities included evaluating referral indications and understanding genetic test utility.
Conclusions:
- The identified priorities can shape educational modules for GPs.
- Improved GP training in genetics can enhance patient care for hereditary conditions.
- Case-based education is recommended for practical skill development.
