Summary

The serotonin 2B receptor (5-HT(2B) R) is crucial for tooth enamel development. Knockout mice lacking this receptor showed significantly reduced enamel volume and structural defects, impacting mineralization.

  • KO mice exhibited significantly reduced enamel volume in molars compared to WT mice.
  • Defective mineralization and structural abnormalities, including altered Hunter-Schreger bands, were observed in KO mice.
  • Minor disturbances were also noted in the incisors of KO mice.

Conclusions:

  • The 5-HT(2B) R plays a significant role in regulating enamel formation and mineralization.
  • Disruption of 5-HT(2B) R signaling impairs ameloblast function and amelogenesis.
  • These findings highlight the importance of 5-HT(2B) R in maintaining healthy tooth enamel structure.
