  • Behavioral assessments (Morris water task, hole board, T-maze) were performed on 4-week-old male rat pups.
  • Zinc concentrations in serum, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex were measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy.

    • Maternal ZnSO(4) supplementation significantly improved memory in the Morris water task probe trial.
    • Increased climbing behavior was observed in the lower-dose ZnSO(4) group during the hole board test.
    • ZnSO(4) treatment elevated serum zinc levels and showed correlations between hippocampal zinc and cognitive performance.

    Conclusions:

    • Prenatal and postnatal zinc supplementation can enhance cognitive development and memory in rats.
    • Maternal zinc intake influences offspring brain zinc levels and associated cognitive functions.
