Software accurately measures keystroke durations, a potential indicator of muscle fatigue from computer use. This finding supports using software tools to study musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) linked to intensive computer work.

Area of Science:

  • Ergonomics
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Intensive computer use is linked to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).
  • Muscle fatigue is a suspected contributing factor to MSDs.
  • Keystroke durations may serve as a surrogate measure for muscle fatigue.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the accuracy of OS-dependent software for measuring keystroke durations.
  • To compare software measurements with a gold standard (USB analyzer).

Main Methods:

  • Collected keystroke data from six subjects.
  • Analyzed keystroke durations using both OS-dependent software and a USB analyzer.
  • Compared measurements between the two systems.

Main Results:

  • The software underestimated keystroke durations by 3.8 ms (103.5 ms vs. 107.3 ms; p < 0.0001).
  • Individual keystroke durations showed a high correlation between the software and USB analyzer (R² = 0.997).

Conclusions:

  • Despite minor underestimation, the software program is a reliable tool for collecting keystroke duration data.
  • This validated method can aid in researching MSDs associated with computer use.
