Background:

Self-inflicted burns represent a significant challenge in burn centers, often associated with severe outcomes.
Understanding the specific characteristics and risk factors of self-inflicted burns is crucial for targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the incidence, characteristics, behavior, and mortality of patients with self-inflicted burns admitted to a burn center in Brazil.
To compare outcomes of self-inflicted burns with accidental burns.

Main Methods:

A prospective study of burn patients admitted to the Burns Unit of Hospital Regional da Asa Norte, Brasília, Brazil, from February 2008 to February 2009.
Data collection included patient demographics, burn characteristics, injury cause, treatment duration, and outcomes (discharge or death).

Main Results:

Fifteen cases of self-inflicted burns were identified, with a mean age of 38.0 years; 66.7% were women.
The mortality rate was high at 40%, with an average burned body surface of 38.7%. Alcohol was used in 66.7% of cases.
Self-inflicted burns resulted in more extensive lesions, longer hospitalizations (mean 20.1 days), and worse prognosis compared to accidental burns.

Conclusions:

Patients with self-inflicted burns present with higher mortality rates, more severe injuries, and prolonged hospital stays.
Marital conflict was a primary trigger, and alcohol consumption was prevalent.
Continuous psychiatric support is essential for preventing recurrent self-harm in this patient population.
