Basic geriatric assessment (BGA) is not widely used in German primary care. General practitioners (GPs) find it time-consuming and lack clear therapeutic outcomes, hindering its integration into routine practice.
Area of Science:
- Geriatric Medicine
- Primary Care Research
- Health Services Research
Context:
- The German healthcare system covers basic geriatric assessment (BGA).
- Primary care practices are the setting for this evaluation.
- Understanding the adoption of BGA in general practice is crucial.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the acceptance and utilization of BGA in German primary care.
- To identify barriers and facilitators for BGA implementation.
- To assess the perceived usefulness of BGA by general practitioners (GPs).
Summary:
- Qualitative interviews and online questionnaires were used.
- 17 GPs and 161 patients participated.
- GPs primarily used BGA for suspected cognitive impairment, with limited concrete interventions and guideline adherence.
Impact:
- BGA is not yet an established tool in German primary care.
- Significant barriers include time constraints and lack of clear therapeutic consequences.
- Further research is needed to identify optimal BGA instruments for older patients in general practice.
