Subclavian artery aneurysms: management implications in a resource-limited setting

Surgical management of subclavian artery aneurysms (SCAA) is effective, with no perioperative mortality and a 100% early patency rate in this study. This approach is recommended for patients with SCAA.

- Subclavian artery aneurysms (SCAA) are rare but pose significant risks including rupture, thrombosis, and embolism.

- To describe the etiology, presentation, and surgical outcomes of patients with SCAA.
- To evaluate the effectiveness of surgical intervention for SCAA.

- Surgical management included aneurysm resection and reconstruction with grafts (saphenous vein or synthetic).
- Combined supra- and infraclavicular incisions were used in most cases.

- Etiologies included trauma (5), thoracic outlet syndrome (4), and atherosclerosis (1).

Conclusions:
- Surgical treatment for SCAA is effective and safe.
- Surgical intervention is recommended for the majority of patients diagnosed with SCAA.
- Prompt surgical management can prevent serious complications.
