Summary

This study found that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients have higher serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) and IgG levels compared to controls. These findings suggest immunoglobulin deficiency does not predispose individuals to developing COPD.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare serum and sputum immunoglobulin levels (IgG, IgA, IgM) and complement components (C3, C4) in patients with COPD versus healthy controls.
  • To explore potential differences in these markers between COPD subtypes (emphysema-predominant and bronchitis-predominant).

  • Serum and sputum samples were collected from 30 COPD patients (divided into emphysema-predominant and bronchitis-predominant groups) and 30 controls (15 smokers, 15 non-smokers).
