Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neonatal Medicine
  • Pediatric Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Optic disc size is a critical parameter in ophthalmology.
  • Understanding normative values in neonates is essential for early detection of potential visual impairments.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure optic disc size in full term infants.
  • To investigate the influence of sex and birth weight on optic disc dimensions.

Main Methods:

  • Retinal images were acquired from a cohort of full term infants.
  • Optic disc size was quantified using image analysis software.
  • A systematic literature search was performed for comparative analysis.

Main Results:

  • Mean optic disc area was 1.26±0.23 mm², with a vertical diameter of 1.37±0.15 mm and horizontal diameter of 1.14±0.12 mm.

  • The vertical optic disc diameter was significantly longer than the horizontal diameter (p<0.0001).
  • No significant differences in optic disc size were observed based on infant sex or birth weight.
  • Conclusions:

    • Optic disc size in term infants is independent of sex and birth weight.
    • These findings establish normative optic disc measurements for term neonates.
