Task-dependent activations of human auditory cortex to prototypical and nonprototypical vowels

Listening tasks significantly alter auditory cortex (AC) activity. Even identical sounds evoke different brain responses depending on whether subjects discriminate vowels, rate vowel goodness, or perform visual tasks.
