Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiology
  • Otorhinolaryngology

Background:

  • Chondrosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor arising from cartilage.
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) chondrosarcoma is exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • A 49-year-old female presented with a painless swelling in the left preauricular area.
  • Computed tomography (CT) identified a soft tissue mass within the left TMJ.

Findings:

  • The mass exhibited extraarticular extension along the mandibular ramus.
  • Calcification was noted within the extraarticular component of the tumor.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering rare lesions in TMJ pathology.
  • Advanced imaging like CT is crucial for characterizing such masses and planning treatment.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Early diagnosis of TMJ chondrosarcoma is vital for patient outcomes.
