Geant4-DNA Monte Carlo simulations show good agreement for electron slowing-down spectra and W-values in water. Minor differences at low energies highlight areas for model improvement in radiobiological modeling.
Area of Science:
- Medical Physics
- Computational Biology
- Radiation Physics
Background:
- Geant4-DNA is a Monte Carlo toolkit extension for radiobiological modeling.
- Systematic benchmarking of Geant4-DNA's transport characteristics is needed.
Purpose of the Study:
- Benchmark Geant4-DNA's electron slowing-down spectra and W-values in water.
- Evaluate energy transfer models for radiobiological applications.
Main Methods:
- Calculated electron slowing-down spectra and W-values using Geant4-DNA.
- Used monoenergetic electron and photon sources in water.
- Compared results with previous studies.
Main Results:
- Geant4-DNA showed overall good agreement with previous studies.
- Differences observed at 100 eV and 500 eV attributed to excitation/de-excitation models.
- Higher high-energy spectrum and lower W-value reported for 1 keV electrons compared to prior work.
Conclusions:
- Geant4-DNA provides reliable results for radiobiological modeling.
- Identified specific energy ranges requiring model refinement.
- Findings aid in understanding electron energy deposition in biological targets.
