Area of Science:

  • Addiction treatment
  • Counselor training
  • Evidence-based practices

Background:

  • Publicly funded addiction treatment agencies face resource limitations for training counselors in empirically supported treatments (ESTs).
  • Group counseling is a common modality for addiction treatment, necessitating effective training methods for counselors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and pilot test a group counseling toolkit for relapse prevention (RP) to enhance counselor training in ESTs.
  • To assess the feasibility and initial impact of the RP toolkit on counselor adherence and skillfulness.

Main Methods:

  • A group counseling toolkit for RP was developed, adapting an approach from the education field.
  • Seventeen community-based addiction counselors received 3 hours of training on the RP toolkit.
  • Counselor adherence to content on "coping with craving" and "drug refusal skills" was assessed post-training.

Main Results:

  • Counselor content adherence scores significantly improved for "coping with craving" (Cohen's d = 1.49) and "drug refusal skills" (Cohen's d = 1.34), indicating very large effect sizes.
  • Counselor skillfulness, initially in the "adequate-to-average" range, did not change significantly after the training.
  • The study demonstrated a feasible benefit to counselor acquisition of ESTs through the toolkit.

Conclusions:

  • The RP toolkit shows promise in improving counselor adherence to ESTs, particularly in areas of craving and refusal skills.
  • While counselor skills did not change, the toolkit's impact on client outcomes remains unknown.
  • A multimedia curriculum approach, like the developed toolkit, may support counselors in applying ESTs in group addiction treatment settings.
