Background:

  • Patients with a first head and neck carcinoma have a high risk of developing successive neoplasms.
  • Second head and neck tumors generally have a poorer prognosis than first tumors.
  • Limited data exist regarding the prognosis of third and fourth head and neck tumors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the survival rates and characteristics of successive head and neck tumors.
  • To investigate the prognosis of third and fourth head and neck tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 4298 patients with primary head and neck carcinoma.
  • Analysis of survival and tumor characteristics for first, second, and successive head and neck tumors.

Main Results:

  • Second and successive tumors frequently occurred in the oral cavity and oropharynx.
  • Subsequent tumors were often diagnosed at a lower stage compared to index tumors.
  • Five-year survival rates decreased progressively: 67.6% (first), 56.1% (second), 45.0% (third), and 32.1% (fourth tumor).

Conclusions:

  • Survival rates decline progressively with each new head and neck tumor.
  • Early detection and management of successive head and neck neoplasms are crucial.
