Summary

This study found threaded acetabular components had high loosening rates in revision hip arthroplasty and concerning rates in primary procedures. Use of these components requires caution, especially in revision cases.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Biomaterials engineering
  • Medical device evaluation

Background:

  • Threaded acetabular components are utilized in total hip arthroplasty.
  • Assessing the long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of these components is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical and radiographic performance of threaded acetabular components in total hip arthroplasty.
  • To identify potential issues related to component fixation in primary and revision procedures.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 48 patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty with threaded acetabular components.
  • Clinical outcomes assessed using standardized scoring systems.
  • Radiographic analysis to evaluate component stability and loosening at 24-44 months follow-up.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Good to excellent clinical results were observed in 60% of primary and 30% of revision arthroplasties.
  • Radiographic analysis showed stable components in 88% of primary and 61% of revision cases.
  • Acetabular component loosening rates were 4% in primary and 34.7% in revision procedures.

Conclusions:

  • The rate of acetabular component loosening is unacceptably high in revision total hip arthroplasty.
  • Acetabular component loosening is a significant concern in primary hip arthroplasty cases.
  • Discretionary use of threaded acetabular components is advised, particularly in revision settings.
