Summary

A single dose of ceftriaxone proved as effective as three doses of gentamicin for preventing infections in open urologic surgery patients. This short-term antibiotic approach improved urinary tract infection rates with no observed side effects.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Antibiotic prophylaxis is crucial in open urologic surgery to prevent postoperative infections.
  • Optimizing antibiotic regimens can reduce infection rates and improve patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of single-dose ceftriaxone versus multi-dose gentamicin for surgical prophylaxis in urologic procedures.
  • To evaluate the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and postoperative fever in both treatment groups.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized study involving 52 patients undergoing open urologic surgery.
  • Group 1 received a single intravenous dose of ceftriaxone (2g).
  • Group 2 received three intravenous doses of gentamicin (80mg) every 8 hours.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The ceftriaxone group had a 0% UTI incidence, compared to 3.5% in the gentamicin group (p=n.s.).
  • Postoperative fever occurred in 8.3% of the ceftriaxone group versus 28.3% in the gentamicin group (p=n.s.).
  • No clinical or hematological drug side effects were reported in either group.

Conclusions:

  • Short-term antibiotic prophylaxis, including single-dose ceftriaxone, is effective in reducing UTI rates after open urologic surgery.
  • Single-dose ceftriaxone demonstrates comparable efficacy to a three-dose gentamicin regimen for surgical prophylaxis.
  • Ceftriaxone offers a potentially simpler and equally effective prophylactic strategy in urologic surgery.
