Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of a dedicated geriatric trauma unit (G-60 unit).
  • To compare outcomes of elderly trauma patients managed in a specialized unit versus a control group.
  • To assess the impact of a multidisciplinary approach on geriatric trauma patient care.

Main Methods:

  • Established a geriatric trauma unit (G-60) at a Level II trauma facility for patients >60 years old.
  • Collected data from August 2009 to July 2010 for the G-60 unit.
  • Compared G-60 patient data with a control group from January 2008 to December 2008.

  • The G-60 unit (393 patients) showed reduced average lengths of stay (LOS) in ED, OR, SICU, and hospital compared to the control group (280 patients).
  • Mortality rate decreased from 5.7% in the control group to 3.8% in the G-60 group.
  • The G-60 group had significantly lower rates of pneumonia (0% vs 1.8%), respiratory failure (1.3% vs 6.8%), and urinary tract infection (1.5% vs 3.9%).

  • A dedicated geriatric trauma unit significantly improves outcomes for elderly trauma patients.
  • Addressing the specific needs of this population through specialized care enhances patient recovery.
  • The findings support the implementation of multidisciplinary geriatric trauma units.
