Area of Science:

  • Visual perception
  • Color science
  • Computational modeling

Background:

  • Previous research explored lightness and brightness perception.
  • Complex scenes present challenges for visual constancy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate lightness and brightness perception under spatially varying illuminants.
  • To assess lightness constancy with different illuminance profiles and steepnesses.

Main Methods:

  • Simulated complex scenes using cathode-ray-tube (CRT) displays.
  • Utilized an array of 35 gray reflective patches.
  • Employed three illuminance profiles: step, linear gradient, and side illumination.
  • Observers performed lightness and brightness matching tasks.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Lightness constancy was observed across all tested illuminance profiles.
  • Matched lightness occurred when patches had similar simulated reflectance.
  • Illuminance gradients were perceptible but did not disrupt lightness constancy.

Conclusions:

  • Demonstrates robust lightness constancy in simulated complex visual environments.
  • Perceived lightness is strongly tied to surface reflectance, even under non-uniform lighting.
  • Visual system effectively compensates for varying illumination to maintain stable perception of surface properties.
