Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess pulmonary function in plastic factory workers exposed to recycled plastic fumes.
  • To compare lung function parameters between exposed workers and non-exposed controls.

Main Methods:

  • Pulmonary function tests were conducted on 31 plastic factory workers and 31 age/sex-matched controls.
  • Spirometry was performed using a Sibelmed Datospir 120 B portable spirometer.

Main Results:

  • Workers showed significant decreases in key flow rates (MEF 25%, MEF 50%, MEF 75%, FEF 25-75%) and lung volumes/capacities (FVC, FEV1, VC, TV, ERV, MVV).
  • Lung function decrements were observed regardless of smoking status or duration of exposure (even <5 years).

Conclusions:

  • Plastic factory workers exhibit impaired pulmonary function due to occupational fume exposure.
  • Engineering controls and personal respiratory protection are crucial to mitigate risks from organic dust exposure in workplaces.
