Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.

Background:

Numerous grading scales exist for age-related facial changes.
The clinical validity and importance of combined facial aging assessment tools were previously unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the reliability and validity of a total face score and global scales.
To evaluate these scales for estimating patient age, aesthetic treatment effort, and facial aging signs.

Main Methods:

Descriptive, reliability, correlation, and principal component analyses were performed.
Fifty subjects were assessed by 12 raters using 20 grading scales and global face assessment scales.

Main Results:

High inter- and intrarater reliability was found for the total face score and scales measuring estimated age and aesthetic treatment effort.
These measures showed a strong correlation with actual patient age.
Lower facial areas were particularly indicative of aging.

Conclusions:

Aesthetic grading scales and global scales for age and treatment effort are reliable and valid.
Comprehensive facial evaluation aids in identifying key aging areas.
These tools can help define optimal aesthetic treatment strategies.
