White matter abnormalities in children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder: a diffusion tensor imaging

Juvenile obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) shows white matter (WM) abnormalities in multiple brain tracts. These findings suggest potential myelination changes and involvement of additional brain regions beyond the typical circuitry in pediatric OCD.

- Increased radial diffusivity was noted in several WM tracts, including the corpus callosum, superior and inferior longitudinal fasciculi, uncinate fasciculi, anterior thalamic radiation, inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, internal capsule, and cerebellar peduncles.

- Findings indicate widespread white matter (WM) tract involvement in juvenile obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
- This suggests potential involvement of parietal cortex, lateral prefrontal cortex, and limbic system, in addition to established orbitofrontal-striato-thalamo-cortical circuitry.
- Observed WM differences may reflect underlying myelination changes in pediatric OCD.
