Summary

Bilateral temporal bone fractures can lead to profound hearing loss. Cochlear implantation effectively restored hearing and speech understanding in four patients with this condition.

  • All four patients became regular users of their cochlear implants.
  • No instances of facial nerve stimulation were reported.
  • Implant-aided audiometry revealed a hearing threshold of 28 dB HL.
  • Speech understanding performance was comparable to that of standard postlingual adult cochlear implant recipients.
  • Conclusions:

    • Cochlear implantation is a viable and effective rehabilitative option for patients experiencing profound sensorineural hearing loss due to temporal bone fractures.
    • The procedure offers significant improvements in hearing thresholds and speech comprehension in this patient cohort.
