Summary

Echinococcus multilocularis, a parasite, has been detected in wild canids across Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois. Its eastward spread into Michigan from southern regions is confirmed, with new distribution records established.

  • Echinococcus multilocularis was identified in wild canids throughout northern and central Indiana, northwestern Ohio, and east-central Illinois.
  • In 1993-1994, 6.3% of examined wild canids in Michigan and Ohio were infected.
  • Infections were concentrated in central/southwestern Michigan and northwestern/west-central Ohio, indicating eastward spread.
  • Conclusions:

    • New state and distribution records for Echinococcus multilocularis were established in the Midwestern US.
    • The parasite is actively spreading eastward into Michigan from southern areas.
    • Continued monitoring is crucial for understanding and managing the spread of Echinococcus multilocularis.
