Fractures: Bone Repair

Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. Area of Science:

  • Trauma Care
  • Psychology of Recovery
  • Patient Experience

Background:

  • Hope is crucial for recovery from illness and injury.
  • Its construction within acute trauma care is not well understood.
  • Understanding hope can reveal its therapeutic potential and practical challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore patient and healthcare professional experiences of hope on a trauma unit.
  • To understand the meaning and function of hope in acute trauma recovery.

Main Methods:

  • Ethnographic approach with in-depth qualitative interviews.
  • Participant observation and informal discussions with patients.
  • Focus groups with healthcare professionals to refine findings.

Main Results:

  • Hope identified as a dynamic force for recovery ('moving forward').
  • Challenges in recovery and finding a future were highlighted.
  • Realistic hopefulness emerged as a key process facilitated by staff.

Conclusions:

  • Healthcare professionals view hope as fundamental to trauma care.
  • Patients focus on present suffering and immediate future.
  • Patients' hopes are contextualized by their pre-injury lives.
