Summary

Primary cutaneous leiomyosarcoma is a rare skin cancer. This study details a case, highlighting its histological and immunohistochemical features for better understanding and diagnosis of this uncommon soft tissue neoplasm.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Primary cutaneous leiomyosarcoma (PCL) is a rare soft tissue neoplasm, representing 2-3% of superficial soft tissue sarcomas.
  • Typically affects individuals aged 50-70 years, with a predilection for lower extremities.
  • Characterized clinically by solitary, well-circumscribed nodules and microscopically by fascicles of spindle cells with cigar-shaped nuclei.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To document a case of primary cutaneous leiomyosarcoma in an elderly male.
  • To discuss the histological features and immunohistochemical profile of this uncommon neoplasm.
  • To enhance understanding and diagnostic accuracy for PCL.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a 77-year-old male patient.
  • Detailed histological examination of the tumor.

  • Immunohistochemical analysis to characterize the neoplastic cells.
  • Main Results:

    • The case presented as a primary cutaneous leiomyosarcoma in an elderly patient.
    • Histological findings confirmed the characteristic features of leiomyosarcoma.
    • Immunohistochemistry provided a detailed profile of the tumor's cellular markers.

    Conclusions:

    • Primary cutaneous leiomyosarcoma is an uncommon but distinct entity.
    • Accurate histological and immunohistochemical evaluation is crucial for diagnosis.
    • Understanding its features aids in managing local recurrence and patient care.
