Background:

Immigration increases ethnic minority diversity in the U.S.
Prior research often overlooks intra-group diversity in ethnic integration studies.
Focus has been on panethnic differences rather than within-group variations.

Purpose of the Study:

Examine diverse integration pathways among ethnic minorities.
Analyze marriage and cohabitation patterns across different ethnic groups.
Investigate the role of nativity status in integration.

Main Methods:

Utilized 2000 U.S. Census data.
Focused on individuals of Puerto Rican, Mexican, Chinese, and Filipino origin.
Examined intermarriage and cohabitation with whites, other minorities, within panethnic groups, and within ethnic groups.

Main Results:

Strong ethnic endogamy observed; panethnic endogamy also significant.
Unions with whites are a key integration path, varying by ethnicity, nativity, age at arrival, and education.
Significant ethnic variations exist in marriages/cohabitations with other racial/ethnic minorities.

Alternative integration paths are available and viable for all ethnic groups.
