Background:

  • White spot lesions (WSLs) are common decalcified enamel defects following fixed orthodontic therapy.
  • Effective treatment strategies are needed to improve the aesthetic and structural integrity of affected enamel.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of sodium fluoride mouth rinse, casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), and the microabrasion technique in treating post-orthodontic WSLs.

Main Methods:

  • Eighty patients with 966 WSLs were divided into four groups: control (brushing only), sodium fluoride rinse, CPP-ACP (Tooth Mousse), and microabrasion (18% hydrochloric acid).
  • Treatments were administered over a specified period, with outcomes assessed for lesion area reduction and success rates.
  • Statistical analysis employed generalized linear mixed models and Tukey HSD tests at P < .05.

Main Results:

  • All treatment groups demonstrated a significant decrease in WSL area.
  • Microabrasion achieved the highest success rate (97%).
  • CPP-ACP showed a significantly higher success rate (58%) compared to sodium fluoride rinse (48%) and the control group (45%).

Conclusions:

  • CPP-ACP offers superior remineralization benefits compared to fluoride rinse for post-orthodontic WSLs.
  • Microabrasion is a highly effective method for the cosmetic enhancement of established white spot lesions.
