Summary

Single-incision laparoscopic surgery using transvaginal access enabled sigmoid colon resection in a patient with early stage sigmoid cancer. This minimally invasive approach resulted in negligible blood loss and a rapid recovery, highlighting its potential in colorectal surgery.

Background:

Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) offers cosmetic and potential ergonomic benefits.
Transvaginal access provides a natural orifice for minimally invasive procedures, avoiding abdominal incisions.
Sigmoid colon cancer is a common malignancy requiring surgical intervention.

Observation:

A 54-year-old woman with early stage sigmoid cancer underwent sigmoid colon resection.
The procedure utilized a single-incision laparoscopic approach exclusively through transvaginal access.
Operative time was 270 minutes with negligible blood loss and no intraoperative complications.

Findings:

The transvaginal approach facilitated complete sigmoid colon resection without the need for transabdominal assistance.
The patient experienced minimal postoperative pain and demonstrated rapid recovery of gastrointestinal function.
Histopathological examination confirmed early-stage sigmoid cancer.

Implications:

Transvaginal laparoscopic surgery represents a promising advancement in minimally invasive colorectal procedures.
This technique may offer an alternative to traditional laparoscopic and open surgeries for sigmoid colon pathologies.
Further research and technological advancements could expand the role of transvaginal access in various abdominal surgeries, potentially rivaling natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES).
