In human women, oogenesis produces one mature egg cell or ovum for every precursor cell that enters meiosis. Summary

Endometriosis increases the risk of clear-cell, low-grade serous, and endometrioid ovarian cancers. This study found no association between endometriosis and mucinous or high-grade serous invasive ovarian cancers or borderline tumors.

Background:

  • Endometriosis is a known risk factor for epithelial ovarian cancer.
  • The association between endometriosis and specific ovarian cancer subtypes, including borderline tumors, requires further clarification.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between a history of endometriosis and the risk of developing specific histological subtypes of invasive ovarian cancer and borderline ovarian tumors.

Main Methods:

  • A pooled analysis of 13 international case-control studies from the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium.
  • Logistic regression models were used to assess the association between self-reported endometriosis and ovarian cancer risk, adjusting for relevant covariates.

Main Results:

  • Endometriosis was significantly associated with an increased risk of clear-cell (OR 3.05), low-grade serous (OR 2.11), and endometrioid (OR 2.04) invasive ovarian cancers.
  • No significant association was found between endometriosis and mucinous or high-grade serous invasive ovarian cancers, or serous or mucinous borderline ovarian tumors.

Conclusions:

  • Women with endometriosis have an elevated risk for specific ovarian cancer subtypes, particularly clear-cell, low-grade serous, and endometrioid types.
  • Further research into the mechanisms of malignant transformation of endometriosis is crucial for identifying high-risk individuals.
