Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if periodontal disease influences the time it takes for women to conceive.
  • To explore potential demographic differences in the relationship between PD and TTC.

Main Methods:

  • The study analyzed data from 3416 spontaneous conceptions within a multi-center randomized controlled trial on PD treatment in pregnancy.
  • Periodontal disease was defined by deep probing pocket depths at multiple sites.
  • Women reported their TTC and need for fertility treatment at recruitment.

Main Results:

  • Periodontal disease was identified in 29.7% of women, with a higher prevalence in those with TTC >12 months (34.9%).
  • Women with PD had a longer mean TTC (7.1 months) compared to those without PD (5.0 months).
  • Non-Caucasian women with PD showed a significantly increased likelihood of TTC >12 months (OR: 2.88) compared to Caucasian women without PD.

Conclusions:

  • Periodontal disease is associated with an increased TTC in the non-Caucasian population.
  • Further investigation is required to ascertain if PD or other co-existing factors are responsible for this association.
  • Age, BMI, and smoking were also identified as predictors of TTC >1 year.
