Hand hygiene

Asepsis is the practice of preventing or breaking the chain of infection. The nurse employs aseptic techniques to prevent the spread of microorganisms and reduce the risk of diseases. Hand hygiene is the cornerstone of aseptic techniques and is classified into medical and surgical asepsis. Medical asepsis includes hand hygiene and the use of gloves. Summary

Amine fluoride toothpaste and chlorhexidine spray both remineralized caries in nursing home residents. Oral hygiene indices did not significantly improve, but both interventions showed promise for dental health in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of amine fluoride toothpaste and gel versus chlorhexidine spray for improving oral hygiene in institutionalized adults.
  • To evaluate the impact of these interventions on plaque, gingival indices, and caries remineralization.

Main Methods:

  • A 6-month study involving 26 institutionalized adults (≥65 years) with at least four teeth.
  • Participants were assigned to amine fluoride (toothpaste/gel), chlorhexidine spray, or control (brushing without toothpaste) groups.
  • Evaluated plaque/gingival indices, oral health status, and microbial counts (Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus), alongside caries remineralization using Diagnodent®.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-two participants completed the study; no statistically significant differences in plaque or gingival indices were observed between groups.
  • Both amine fluoride and chlorhexidine interventions demonstrated caries remineralization compared to the control group.
