Summary

This study presents a new surgical technique for reducing giant left atrial volume, successfully alleviating severe dyspnea and compressive symptoms in a patient. The novel approach achieved a 50% reduction in left atrial size, improving patient quality of life.

Background:

Severe mitral insufficiency and giant left atrium can cause significant dyspnea and compressive symptoms like dysphagia and dysphonia.
Existing treatments may not adequately address the volume and compressive effects of a giant left atrium.

Observation:

A novel surgical technique for left atrial volume reduction was performed.
The procedure involved circumferential excision of the left atrium, including the left atrial appendage.
Additional cardiac procedures included mitral valve replacement, tricuspid valve annuloplasty, and coronary bypass.

Findings:

The novel left atrial volume reduction technique achieved a 50% decrease in left atrial size.
The patient experienced complete clinical resolution of compressive symptoms (dysphagia and dysphonia).
