Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Periodontology
  • Antimicrobial Therapy

Background:

  • Periodontal disease, characterized by inflammation and tissue loss, is primarily caused by dental plaque.
  • Conventional treatments include mechanical biofilm removal and antibiotics, but access limitations and antibiotic resistance pose challenges.
  • Developing new antimicrobial strategies is crucial for effective periodontal disease management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) as an innovative adjunct treatment for periodontal disease.
  • To evaluate PDT's potential in eliminating periopathogenic bacteria, especially in difficult-to-access areas.
  • To present PDT as a novel antimicrobial concept with potentially fewer complications than traditional antibiotics.

Main Methods:

  • Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) utilizes low-power lasers with specific wavelengths.
  • A photosensitizer drug is administered to target microorganisms.
  • PDT aims to induce cell death in bacteria upon light activation.

Main Results:

  • PDT demonstrates potential as an effective adjunct to mechanical and antibiotic therapies.
  • It aids in the elimination of periopathogenic bacteria.
  • The method offers a promising alternative to overcome limitations of conventional treatments.

Conclusions:

  • Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a viable adjunctive treatment for periodontal disease.
  • It presents a novel antimicrobial strategy with potential benefits over existing methods.
  • PDT may help overcome challenges associated with antibiotic resistance and difficult-to-access infection sites.
