Summary

Many patients with itchy eyes (allergic conjunctivitis) also experience dry eyes and redness, indicating a common overlap between these ocular surface conditions. These findings highlight the frequent comorbidity of allergic conjunctivitis and dry eye syndrome.

Background:

  • Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) and dry eye syndrome (DES) are prevalent inflammatory disorders affecting the ocular surface.
  • These conditions can coexist in the same patient.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential comorbidity and symptom overlap between AC and DES.
  • To analyze the relationship between self-reported itchiness, dryness, and redness in ocular surface disease.

Main Methods:

  • A survey of 689 patients in an optometric setting using the Subjective Evaluation of Symptom of Dryness questionnaire.
  • Patients were categorized based on reported levels of itchiness, dryness, and redness.

Main Results:

  • Clinically significant itchiness was reported by 28.2%, dry eyes by 35.8%, and redness by 28.2% of patients.
  • A significant overlap was observed: 57.7% of patients with itchiness also had dryness, and 45.3% with dryness reported itchiness.
  • Itchiness, dryness, and redness were statistically interdependent (P<.001), with higher odds of co-occurrence.

Conclusions:

  • A majority of patients experiencing symptoms consistent with AC also present with dry eyes and redness.
  • These results suggest that AC and DES frequently occur concurrently in symptomatic patients.
