Sexually transmitted infections in older people: the community nurse's role

Abstract:
Sexual health is complex and applies to everyone. Sexual ill health can have negative outcomes for individuals, communities and the country in terms of costs, as well as the impact it can have on a person's health and wellbeing. STIs are an important source of sexual ill health, but can be prevented by education and promotion of safer sex practices. One essential aspect of the role of the community nurse is to promote health; community nurses have an obvious and clearly defined public health role. The challenges faced by the older person with regards to their sexual health need to be acknowledged and actions, devised and implemented, that will engage them. This article discusses some of the issues that older people may face with regards to their sexual health. A resource list is provided.
