Background:

Growing concerns regarding the safety and traceability of human tissues and cells in Europe.
European Commission directives (2004-2006) established regulatory frameworks.
EUROCET was endorsed to assist member states in meeting regulatory obligations.

Purpose of the Study:

To outline the role and activities of EUROCET in regulating human tissues and cells.
To detail the infrastructure and resources developed by EUROCET for compliance.
To highlight EUROCET's contribution to vigilance and surveillance systems.

Main Methods:

Established connections with European Union (EU) Competent Authorities (CAs).
Developed a public website publishing lists of CAs, authorized Tissue Establishments (TEs), and activity data.
Participated in the Substances of Human Origin (SOHO) Vigilance and Surveillance project.
Collaborated with stakeholders on a common coding system for donation and products.

Main Results:

EUROCET includes 33 countries and 57 CAs.
A database records 3,974 TEs: 1,108 for tissues, 1,480 for hematopoietic progenitor cells, and 1,386 for assisted reproduction.
The EUROCET website provides access to 2010 activity data.

Conclusions:

EUROCET effectively represents CAs within the European network.
EU member states now utilize a web portal and database for implementing tissue and cell directives.
This infrastructure enhances the practical application of European regulations for tissues and cells.
