Background:

Societal pressures and cultural values significantly influence perceptions of female virginity.
There is a recognized need to understand healthcare students' perspectives on virginity and related practices.
Addressing knowledge gaps is crucial for improving healthcare responses to violence against women.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess Turkish nursing students' knowledge and perceptions of virginity, virginity examinations, and hymen repair.
To explore the impact of social pressures and values on these perceptions.
To identify areas for educational improvement in nursing curricula regarding sensitive gender-based issues.

Main Methods:

A descriptive, cross-sectional study design was employed.
A convenience sample of 781 undergraduate nursing students from two Turkish universities participated.
An investigator-designed questionnaire was used for data collection.

Main Results:

A majority of students agreed that a man should marry a virgin woman.
Student opinions were significantly influenced by social pressures and cultural values surrounding virginity.
Hymen repair was considered acceptable by a notable portion of the participating students.

Conclusions:

Nursing students' views on virginity are shaped by prevailing social norms and values.
There is a need for enhanced educational programs for nurses to address virginity-related violence.
Improving nurses' understanding is vital for their expanded role in combating violence against women.
