Intervertebral disc herniation refers to the displacement of the nucleus pulposus (the gel-like inner core of the disc) through a tear or weakened area in the annulus fibrosus (the outer fibrous ring).   • 35 artificial discs were implanted in 31 patients (average age 42.9 years) for lumbar disc pain.
  • Follow-up included radiological assessment and VAS/ODI scores at multiple intervals.
  • No disc loosening, subsidence, or adjacent segment degeneration observed; two cases of heterotopic ossification.

Impact:

  • Significant reduction in low back pain (VAS score from 66.3 to 14.1) and disability (ODI from 48.9 to 24.5).
  • Outcomes comparable or superior to other reported TDR studies and spinal fusion.
  • TDR demonstrated to be an efficient treatment for degenerative disc disease in selected young, active patients.
