Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) and Cancer

Rous Sarcoma virus or RSV was discovered by F. Peyton Rous in the year 1911 as a filterable transmissible agent that could cause tumors in chickens. He won a Nobel Prize for this discovery in 1966. His experiments clearly demonstrated that some cancers could be caused by infectious agents and led to the discovery of many more cancer-causing viruses in animals as well as humans.
RSV is a retrovirus that contains two copies of a plus-strand  RNA genome. Its genome consists of four main open...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pulmonology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Sarcomas are rare mesenchymal tumors originating from the lung's stromal elements.
  • Primary pulmonary sarcomas account for only 0.2%-0.5% of all lung malignancies.
  • These tumors are diagnostically challenging and can arise from the lung parenchyma, bronchial tree, or pulmonary arteries.

Observation:

  • A case of a 43-year-old African-American female presenting with chronic cough, fatigue, and weight loss is detailed.
  • The patient's symptoms are consistent with a primary pulmonary sarcoma.

Findings:

  • Primary pulmonary leiomyosarcomas are a specific subtype of these rare tumors.
  • Early detection is crucial for effective patient management.

Implications:

  • Complete tumor resection is the primary available treatment option.
  • The management of pulmonary sarcomas differs significantly from typical lung cancers, presenting unique clinical challenges.
