Summary

Combined cardiac and pulmonary surgery is safe for select patients. This study found a favorable prognosis for patients undergoing concurrent cardiac operations and lung lesion resection.

Background:

  • Surgical management of patients with both critical cardiac disease and resectable lung lesions presents a complex clinical challenge.
  • The optimal approach for these patients remains a subject of debate within the medical community.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of combined cardiac and pulmonary operations in patients with concurrent cardiac conditions and lung lesions.
  • To assess the short-term and long-term outcomes, including survival rates, for this specific patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 21 patients who underwent combined cardiac and pulmonary operations between 1982 and 1988.
  • Pulmonary resections (wedge resections or lobectomies) were performed concurrently with cardiac procedures requiring extracorporeal circulation.
