[Sudden cardiac death in mitral valve prolapse syndrome?]
1Institut für Rechtsmedizin, Universität München.
Insights
Primary mitral valve prolapse is a rare cause of sudden cardiac death, often due to cardiac arrhythmia. Postmortem diagnosis is challenging, requiring severe leaflet changes or patient history.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Pathology
- Forensic Medicine
Background:
- Primary mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is an uncommon cardiac condition.
- MVP is infrequently associated with sudden cardiac death (SCD).
- Fewer than 100 global cases of MVP-related SCD are documented.
Observation:
- This study examines three postmortem cases.
- The deaths were apparently linked to mitral valve prolapse.
- Complications of MVP may have contributed to the fatalities.
Findings:
- Sudden cardiac death in these cases was attributed to mitral valve prolapse.
- Cardiac arrhythmia is the likely mechanism of death.
- Postmortem diagnosis is difficult, relying on significant mitral leaflet alterations and patient history.
Implications:
- Highlights the potential for MVP to cause sudden cardiac death.
- Underscores diagnostic challenges in postmortem examinations for MVP-related fatalities.
- Emphasizes the importance of considering MVP in unexplained sudden cardiac deaths.
Abstract:
Primary mitral valve prolapse is considered a rare cause of sudden cardiac death. Close to 100 cases are documented worldwide. The cause of death seems to be cardiac arrhythmia, so postmortal diagnosis is difficult and depends on severe changes of the mitral leaflets and--sometimes--on anamnesis. Three postmortem cases are presented, where a sudden cardiac death apparently was caused by mitral valve prolapse or its complications.
