Summary

This study found that diabetes mellitus is associated with a higher incidence and severity of pinguecula, an eye condition. Age also contributes to pinguecula development in both diabetic and non-diabetic individuals.

Background:

  • Pinguecula is a common degenerative condition of the conjunctiva.
  • Diabetes mellitus is a systemic disease with various ocular manifestations.
  • The relationship between diabetes and pinguecula has not been extensively studied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between age and pinguecula incidence and severity in patients with diabetes mellitus.
  • To compare pinguecula grade between diabetic patients and non-diabetic controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 160 patients with type 2 diabetes and 160 age-matched controls (aged 31-70) were analyzed.
  • Pinguecula grade was assessed at nasal and temporal conjunctival locations using a standardized grading system.
  • Multivariate logistic regression was employed to identify independent risk factors.

Main Results:

  • An age-related increase in pinguecula grade was observed in both diabetic and control groups.
  • Diabetic patients exhibited significantly higher pinguecula grade and prevalence on both nasal and temporal conjunctiva compared to controls.
  • Diabetes mellitus was independently associated with increased pinguecula prevalence and severity, even after adjusting for age.

Conclusions:
