The vascular phase, also known as vasospasm, is the initial stage of hemostasis, crucial for preventing excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. Summary

Migraine attacks can trigger hemifacial spasm (HFS), a rare occurrence. This study presents three cases where HFS developed during migraine episodes, suggesting a potential complication of migraine.

Background:

  • This study details three new cases of HFS associated with migraine attacks.

Observation:

  • Three patients (31-36 years old) experienced HFS temporally linked to migraine onset.
  • Muscle spasms began after headache pain started.
  • Two patients showed electromyographic signs of facial nerve damage and persistent HFS post-migraine.

Findings:

  • Migraine episodes can be associated with the development of hemifacial spasm.
  • The onset of HFS appears linked to migraine activity.

Implications:

  • HFS in migraine may stem from central hyperexcitability or vascular compression of the facial nerve.
  • Migraine-triggered hemifacial spasm might be considered a migraine complication in susceptible individuals.
