Summary

Heavy physical work may contribute to neck trouble (NT), particularly in men. Genetic factors might influence this relationship, suggesting a complex interplay between work, genetics, and NT.

  • Included twin pairs discordant for self-reported NT in the past year.
  • Analyzed self-reported physical workload (sitting, sitting/walking, light, heavy physical) using conditional logistic regression.

Main Results:

  • No significant association was found between physical workload categories and NT overall.
  • A moderate increased risk for NT was observed in dizygotic (DZ) men reporting heavy physical work (OR 2.3).
  • This association was not observed in monozygotic (MZ) men or in any women (MZ or DZ).

Conclusions:

  • Heavy physical work may be a contributing factor to NT, potentially specific to men.
  • The differing results between DZ and MZ men suggest that genetic factors play a role in modulating the relationship between physical workload and NT.
