Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Sports Medicine
  • Knee Biomechanics

Background:

  • Recurrent patellar dislocation presents a significant challenge in orthopedic practice.
  • Effective surgical management is crucial for restoring knee function and preventing further instability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term outcomes of lateral release and medial plication for treating recurrent patellar dislocation.
  • To assess the efficacy and safety of this surgical technique over an extended follow-up period.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 31 patients (12 male, 19 female) who underwent lateral release and medial plication between 1994 and 2004.
  • Average patient age was 23.9 years, with a mean follow-up of 11.6 years.
  • Surgical outcomes were assessed using Kujala and Tegner scores, radiographic measurements (congruence and lateral patellofemoral angles), and complication rates.

Arthroscopic Excision of Posterior Cruciate Ligament Cysts Using a Double Posteromedial Approach

Published on: October 20, 2023

Main Results:

  • Significant improvement in mean Kujala score (57.5 to 89.2, P < 0.0001) and median Tegner activity score (3 to 7, P < 0.0001).
  • Radiographic improvements noted in congruence angle (-16.5° to -2.8°) and lateral patellofemoral angle (-4.2° to 8.2°).
  • Only three patients experienced postoperative dislocations; no cases of osteoarthritis were observed at final follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Percutaneous lateral release and medial plication provide satisfactory long-term results for recurrent patellar dislocation.
  • This traditional surgical approach is a simple, effective, and safe option with limited morbidity.
