Summary
A functional corpus luteum was observed in the ovary opposite a granulosa cell tumor in a mare, challenging the assumption of contralateral ovarian atrophy. This finding suggests that the contralateral ovary may not always be nonfunctional in cases of granulosa cell tumors.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Medicine
- Reproductive Endocrinology
- Equine Science
Background:
- Granulosa cell tumors are common ovarian neoplasms in mares.
- Ovarian atrophy of the contralateral ovary is a typical diagnostic indicator for granulosa cell tumors.
- The functionality of the contralateral ovary in mares with granulosa cell tumors is often presumed to be compromised.
