Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Biomaterials Science

Background:

  • Increasing number of elderly patients require aortic valve surgery.
  • Minimally invasive surgical strategies are being developed for this demographic.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the sutureless Perceval S aortic valve as a potential alternative for selected patients undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of this novel prosthesis.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter study (Cavalier trial) screened 34 patients for Perceval S implantation.
  • The Perceval S is a sutureless, bioprosthetic valve on a super elastic stent, implanted via a mini-invasive approach (partial upper sternotomy) with cardiopulmonary bypass.
  • Twenty patients received the valve after exclusion criteria were applied.

Main Results:

  • Implantation times were short (8.6 ± 3.1 minutes).
  • Echocardiography showed no paravalvular leakage and low transvalvular gradients (mean 9.8 ± 4.2 mmHg).
  • Patients experienced no major in-hospital complications, with short ICU (1.4 ± 0.5 days) and hospital stays (7 ± 0.7 days).

Conclusions:

  • The sutureless Perceval S aortic valve demonstrates excellent hemodynamics and safety in selected patients.
  • The simple and rapid implantation technique, combined with a mini-invasive approach, can lead to shorter overall operation times.
